ChatGPT Human Collaboration
The initial project Idea was to create a song using the answers provided by ChatGPT.
The Goal was to try and remove the human as much as possible. To streamline the music production process by not making executive or critical decisions and merely generate a result based on what the AI provided.
Due to the nature of ChatGPT however, the process felt more like a collaboration. ChatGPT can not create sound - but when prompted can decide notes. This still saw me - the human and translator between the GPT AI, Synthesizor V AI, and the DAW (digital audio workspace) - doing a LOT of work; and reminded me of a more collaborative producer role that is already within the music process.
Yes GPT chose the basic notes - but I still had to layer, edit, master, and decide synchopation (note timing). It was arguably even more time consuming to use the Synthesizor V AI - as I had to break down the words in there phonetic roots (something you have to be trained to hear) in order to make them understandable.
Below are the results of the devil's work - though it isn't so much a replacement as it is a familiar process of collaboration.

Prompt: Make an alt pop song based on the current trending songs. it should be in a minor, and about being a ghost in the city
Lyrics
[Verse]
I walk the streets at twilight unseen by blurry eyes
Neon glow a haunting sight as shadows harmonize
Invisible I'm passing through these echoes of the night
I am the ghost in the city lost in urban twilight
[Verse 2]
Concrete jungle whispers songs of dreams already dead
Haunted by the stories told by voices in my head
The skyscrapers stand so tall like tombstones in the sky
I'm just a spectral wanderer in the place where echoes sigh
[Chorus]
I'm a ghost in the city you can't see me cry
Through the haze and smoke I drift like tears in the sky
Haunted hearts and empty souls in this urban sprawl
Ghost in the city fades with the dawn's first call
[Verse 3]
Windows show their murky tales behind each glass pane
Laughter turns to sorrow in the cold November rain
Lost among the living souls in corridors of gray
I'm the phantom that you fear but never dare to say
[Chorus]
I'm a ghost in the city you can't see me cry
Through the haze and smoke I drift like tears in the sky
Haunted hearts and empty souls in this urban sprawl
Ghost in the city fades with the dawn's first call
[Bridge]
Silent screams in the alleyways where love and hopes decay
Street lights flicker mournful tones as shadows melt away
In the crowd but all alone I wander ever more
I'm a ghost in the city forever to explore

Here's a set of alt-pop lyrics inspired by current trends, which often include introspective themes, a mix of vulnerability and defiance, and atmospheric, minimalistic production. The lyrics below touch on themes of self-discovery, feeling lost in a modern world, and the tension between hope and doubt.
"Ghost in the City"
(Verse 1)
I feel like a ghost in the city,
Lights flash, but they don't see me.
Wandering streets, chasing shadows,
But it's all slipping through my hands so easily.
I feel like a ghost in the city,
Lights flash, but they don't see me.
Wandering streets, chasing shadows,
But it's all slipping through my hands so easily.
I’m running on empty, chasing the thrill,
But silence gets louder when the night stands still.
I can’t feel my face, but I’m wide awake,
Another sleepless heart, just another mistake.
But silence gets louder when the night stands still.
I can’t feel my face, but I’m wide awake,
Another sleepless heart, just another mistake.
(Pre-Chorus)
But the world keeps spinning faster,
And I’m just tryna hold on,
I don’t know what I’m after,
But I know I’ll keep moving on.
But the world keeps spinning faster,
And I’m just tryna hold on,
I don’t know what I’m after,
But I know I’ll keep moving on.
(Chorus)
Am I fading? Am I dreaming?
Am I broken, or am I healing?
Caught between what’s real and lies,
In the city of neon skies.
I’m screaming out, but no one hears me,
Is this how it feels to be free?
I’m a ghost, a ghost in the city,
A ghost, but I’ll be alright, you’ll see.
(Verse 2)
Staring at a screen, but it’s not me,
A reflection of someone I’ll never be.
I’m swimming through thoughts, but I can't dive deep,
Is it courage or fear that I always keep?
Staring at a screen, but it’s not me,
A reflection of someone I’ll never be.
I’m swimming through thoughts, but I can't dive deep,
Is it courage or fear that I always keep?
The highs don’t last, but the lows, they stay,
And I’m dancing with the night until it fades away.
The music hits, but it’s not enough,
Am I addicted to the pain, or addicted to the rush?
And I’m dancing with the night until it fades away.
The music hits, but it’s not enough,
Am I addicted to the pain, or addicted to the rush?
(Pre-Chorus)
But the world keeps spinning faster,
And I’m just tryna hold on,
I don’t know what I’m after,
But I know I’ll keep moving on.
But the world keeps spinning faster,
And I’m just tryna hold on,
I don’t know what I’m after,
But I know I’ll keep moving on.
(Chorus)
Am I fading? Am I dreaming?
Am I broken, or am I healing?
Caught between what’s real and lies,
In the city of neon skies.
I’m screaming out, but no one hears me,
Is this how it feels to be free?
I’m a ghost, a ghost in the city,
A ghost, but I’ll be alright, you’ll see.
(Bridge)
Lost in the echoes of what’s left unsaid,
Waking up in someone else’s bed.
But there’s fire in the sky tonight,
And I’m burning through, I’ll find my light.
Lost in the echoes of what’s left unsaid,
Waking up in someone else’s bed.
But there’s fire in the sky tonight,
And I’m burning through, I’ll find my light.

I’m screaming out, but no one hears me,
Is this how it feels to be free?
I’m a ghost, a ghost in the city,
A ghost, but I’ll be alright, you’ll see.
(Outro)
I’m a ghost, yeah, but I’ll be alright,
I’ll be alright, you’ll see...
I’ll be alright, you’ll see...
I’m a ghost, yeah, but I’ll be alright,
I’ll be alright, you’ll see...
I’ll be alright, you’ll see...
This song fits with the modern alt-pop style, blending emotional depth with a sense of uncertainty and self-discovery. The idea of being a "ghost in the city" serves as a metaphor for feeling unseen or disconnected, while also hinting at resilience.

Music, to me, is a universal language that transcends words and connects people across time, space, and emotion. It's a form of expression that taps into the depths of human experience—whether it's joy, sorrow, love, or introspection. Music has the power to evoke feelings that words alone often can't capture, providing both an escape from reality and a deeper understanding of it.
I see music as a storyteller, capable of painting vivid emotional landscapes, creating atmospheres, and sharing perspectives that might be difficult to articulate otherwise. It can be deeply personal, reflecting one’s inner world, while also being profoundly collective, uniting people in shared moments of celebration, reflection, or catharsis.
Music's rhythms, melodies, and harmonies have a transformative quality—they can shift moods, inspire action, or calm a storm within. It’s a force of creativity that invites both the artist and the listener to explore, experiment, and feel.

What instruments do you see in the song you wrote lyrics for
ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT
For the song "Ghost in the City," I imagine a modern alt-pop production with a blend of atmospheric and electronic elements alongside more organic instrumentation to give it depth and emotional resonance. Here’s how I envision the instrumental arrangement:
Synth Pads & Atmospheric Textures: To create an ethereal and dreamy atmosphere, the song would use soft synth pads with reverb, building a sense of vastness and loneliness that complements the theme of being a "ghost in the city." These textures could swell in the background to give a sense of space and emotional depth.
Minimalistic Piano or Rhodes: A simple, slightly reverb-heavy piano or Rhodes keyboard could lay down the chord progressions during the verses, especially to bring vulnerability and a sense of intimacy to the quieter moments of the song.
Subtle Bassline: A deep, rumbling synth bass would work well here, supporting the mood and adding weight to the track without overpowering the delicate vocals. It could play sparse, pulsing notes during the verses, becoming more prominent in the chorus to drive the emotional impact.
Drum Machine & Electronic Beats: I envision a tight, programmed beat, likely using a drum machine for a modern feel. The beat could be minimal during the verses, with a focus on electronic hi-hats, snares, and occasional kicks. In the chorus, the beat could pick up with more layered percussion to give it momentum.
Electric Guitar: During the bridge or chorus, an electric guitar could come in, adding light ambient riffs or soft, reverb-laden plucks to add texture. This wouldn’t be a prominent lead instrument but more of an atmospheric addition.
Vocal Effects: Given the introspective, almost haunting lyrics, there could be some vocal effects like delay, reverb, or subtle vocal layering to create an echoing, ghost-like feel in certain sections, especially on the chorus or the outro.
Synth Leads/Arpeggiator: In the post-chorus or bridge, an arpeggiated synth lead could be introduced to give the song a bit of movement and contrast, adding a slightly more upbeat or dynamic feel to balance out the emotional weight of the lyrics.
This combination of electronic and organic elements would create a modern alt-pop sound with a moody, atmospheric vibe, giving the song both a sense of intimacy and expansiveness.

Can you say the exact notes you want the chorus to have
ChatGPT said:
ChatGPT
Absolutely! I can suggest some specific notes for the chorus melody and chords of "Ghost in the City." Let’s start with a common alt-pop key like A minor (which has no sharps or flats, making it easier to work with).
Here’s a potential melody and chord progression for the chorus:
Chorus Chord Progression:
(A minor) → (F major) → (C major) → (G major)
(A minor) → (F major) → (C major) → (G major)
This progression is emotional and atmospheric, and commonly used in pop and alt-pop songs to create a sense of longing or tension.
Melody (based on the A minor scale):
Starting with the first line of the chorus:
“Am I fading? Am I dreaming?”
A → C → E → G (Am chord notes)
“Am I broken, or am I healing?”
F → A → C → E (F chord notes)
“Caught between what’s real and lies,”
E → G → C → E (C chord notes)
“In the city of neon skies.”
G → B → D → G (G chord notes)
Rhythm and Note Duration:
Each line could start with a longer note (like a half note), followed by shorter notes (quarter notes or eighth notes) to create a sense of build-up and movement.
The note A on "Am I fading?" could hold for longer to emphasize the beginning of the chorus.
How it comes together:
The melody follows the chord tones, ensuring a strong harmonic connection. As the chords change from A minor to F major, the melody shifts along with them, creating a cohesive but dynamic flow.
If you try playing these notes or experimenting with them in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), you’ll get a haunting, introspective feel that matches the tone of the song!

For "Ghost in the City," I recommend Eri or Hayden from Synthesizer V. Eri's breathy, velvety tone, with its melancholic depth, would add an emotional, haunting quality to the song. Her smooth transitions and ability to handle both mid-range pop and falsetto could suit the moody, alt-pop vibe.
Alternatively, Hayden’s crisp yet husky tone, reminiscent of early 2000s pop, would give a raw, atmospheric edge to the track, especially for deeper emotional resonance

Since you don't have Eri or Hayden, I can suggest using Saki or SOLARIA, both of which are more widely available Synthesizer V voicebanks.
Saki has a versatile, bright tone with expressive range, perfect for emotional pop songs. She can deliver both soft, introspective moments and powerful choruses.
SOLARIA has a rich, natural-sounding English voice, ideal for alternative and emotional tracks like "Ghost in the City."
Both could capture the haunting, moody vibe of the song effectively!

Yes, Hanakuma could work well for "Ghost in the City." Her voice has a soft, whispery tone with a natural vulnerability, which would suit the haunting and introspective atmosphere of the song. If you're aiming for a more emotional and delicate delivery, Hanakuma would add a beautiful layer of subtlety to the track, especially in the quieter, reflective moments of the verses.
Her voice can bring a sense of fragility to the performance, which could contrast nicely with more powerful sections.

That’s an interesting topic! When people use tools like me to generate ideas, music, or any other creative work, it can sometimes blur the lines of authorship. Ultimately, it’s about how they frame their process.
If someone uses my suggestions as a starting point or a source of inspiration while contributing their own creativity, thoughts, and revisions, it reflects a collaborative effort. However, if they present the results without acknowledging the input from tools like me, it might raise questions about transparency.
Creativity often involves using various resources, influences, and collaborators—whether human or AI. Phonetics is the study of the sounds of human speech. It involves analyzing how sounds are produced (articulatory phonetics), how they are transmitted (acoustic phonetics), and how they are perceived (auditory phonetics). Here are some key aspects of phonetics:
Articulatory Phonetics: Examines how speech sounds are produced by the movement of the vocal organs (like the tongue, lips, and vocal cords). It categorizes sounds based on their place (where in the vocal tract the sound is produced) and manner (how the sound is produced).
Acoustic Phonetics: Focuses on the physical properties of sound waves produced during speech. This includes analyzing frequency, amplitude, and duration of sounds.
Auditory Phonetics: Investigates how the ear and brain perceive speech sounds. This involves understanding how sounds are distinguished and processed by listeners.
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA): A standardized system for transcribing sounds of speech. Each symbol represents a specific sound (phoneme), allowing for accurate representation of pronunciations across different languages.
Phonemes and Allophones: Phonemes are the basic units of sound in a language that can change meaning (like the difference between "bat" and "pat"), while allophones are variations of phonemes that do not change meaning (like the aspirated [pʰ] in "pat" versus the unaspirated [p] in "spat").

If I were to add more to the "Ghost in the City" album cover, I'd emphasize subtle details like faintly glowing, swirling mist around the ghostly figure, giving it more of a spectral presence. I'd also add delicate cracks in the streets or buildings, as if the city is slowly decaying, representing the fading memories and haunting themes of the song. Finally, small, distant silhouettes of other ghostly figures could enhance the feeling of isolation and mystery in the city.
