Artist Statement

Resonance is an emergent polyphonic experience. Consisting of four pillars housing a ‘brain’, electronic performers access data to see what notes are being sung and join in at the same frequency, before ascending or descending to a note in a relative interval. Through combining ‘listening’ with computational actions, Resonance allows for a completely emergent experience – all based on the electronic performer’s whims for a temporary creation of harmony or dissonance. This, in turn, leaves the decision of noise versus music in the hands of the viewer – which brings to light the internal biases that come with sound-based experiences via the dominant Western European sound, and the biases we impose upon technology.
The basis of Resonance is inspired by a vocal exercise the artist practices with the same name – and anyone can choose to become part of the experience by listening in the space and immersing themselves physically within the auditory.

High Concept
Resonance is an Immersive sound-based experience. Through analyzing the volume and frequency of other agents, electronic performers will match pitch and then 'sing' a note in a relative interval - allowing for the creation of harmony or dissonance as per the interpretation of the viewer. Anyone can choose to exist as an observer to the performance or even become part of the experience itself - all for the purpose of becoming a single sound composed of many voices.
