Cover a Collaboration with Dall-E 2
Prompt: “AI and human collaboration, two figures, baroque, playground, album cover”
"PLAYGROUND" is a creative exploration album used to understand more about the workflow between humans and AI in the realm of musical expression. Combining the talents of various AI "Composers", "Performers", and "Lyricists"; as well as humans in the same various roles, this short album showcases the results of the giving and taking autonomy from AI algorithms and humans to various results.
The Album itself was produced using Abelton Live 10 Lite as the main DAW. All of the AI melodies were generated using Dopeloop a free midi melody generator - which has astounding capabilities to generate melodies from 8-64 bars in length, with a root note in any note from C2 to found in western music. Most appealing, however, is the fact that the interval rationality generations are not just based on western music theory, but various theories outside of the western world - which is important when on a path to de-colonizing music expression itself.
The Lyrics were written either by myself or Rytr - a text-based AI generator. Unlike several other text generators that were tried, Rytr allows for true collaboration between humans and AI - where you can give a prompt, set creativity and medium, and then have lyrics generated; but then add your own edits in, highlight where you want the AI to continue from (and what was previously written), and the AI will continue to write based on this data and the prompts again. The name of this album was also named by Rytr when given the prompt of a human/AI collaboration - and since play is the basis of my learning and entire creative practice, it was a welcome surprise.
The performers that can be found on this album are both myself, and Haruka from Vocaloid AI 6. A Japanese voicebank, Haruka was fed AI and human-generated melodies and lyrics which were edited for clarity's sake. Having never worked with the Vocaloid AI before, it was an enlightening and enjoyable experience - as although the assigning of notes to perform was much the same as any midi editor, there was an extra layer of not just giving text, but breaking words down phonetically in order to allow for the clearest pronunciation of words possible. (As seen in the below image, where words over several notes were broken down for timing and emphasis, and some notes were added on the end with just consonants when the AI articulated too softly.)
Overall, this album has been a playground - a place to allow for a deep dive into experimental learning in order to understand, produce, and hone previously lacking skills. Prior to this I had only created and completed one other song within a DAW - three years ago in Protools. My collaboration with others in the music sphere from the producing aspect is also extremely lacking - with the last time also being 5 years prior with traditional western musical instruments. And since graduating high school, I think I've only written a single song myself.
In the end, this album has been a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow, and I'm excited to see where it will take me in the future.

The introductory song to the album. Making use of various generated melodies, Vocaloid AI voicebank "Haruka" performs a song that will introduce the tone for the lyrical rest of the album. Lyrics are generated using AI, but cut, pasted, and recorded together in the 'découpé' poetry style as an attempt to try and translate Haruka to us.

Focusing on giving more control to the algorithm, I'M NOT IN CONTROL allows for the AI to decide what words come out of the human performer's mouth - with only two lines being removed.
The instrumental accompaniment interestingly enough is arguably the most similar to the style of music that I find myself drawn to creating, and the main midi-generated melody suits well.

An Exploration to try and find my own sound, and to see what elements I wanted to carry into the album into collaboration.
I'm reminded of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Steven Universe - where there are enveloping warps and parts sung as though they fall under a 1/1 tempo for pulse. Interestingly enough, although the AI performer Haruka has been set to breathe often in her performance, the initial inhale in this song sounds even more unnatural.

A song lyrically written completely by myself, Selfie explores the existential crisis of the line between humans and AI blurring, with the humans believing they are losing themselves.
The reason why Selfie was chosen as the name, is due to the fact that with automatic touch-ups, voluntary filters, and post-shot editing, the selfies that are posted online are no longer who we are - but a technologically edited version of ourselves. Are they more filter than humans? Are they more human than filter? Are they a technological hybrid?
And furthermore, are we sure we actually exist and aren't a deep-fake?
