Commissioned by Toronto Metropolitan University, “Frosted Layers” is a Photo pop-up Light-based installation. Borrowing elements of frosted glass in the winter months; layers of acrylic are slotted into a wooden base and lit by hidden LEDs to create a magical skyline of downtown Toronto.

Initial Proposal

The provided sketch shows two different types of the installation - with four different variations of version 2 featuring the Student Learning Center (one of TMU’s most iconic Buildings).
All versions feature layering the frosted acrylic to create the illusion of depth - similar to the reference images below.

Final Low-Fidelity Prototype

The proposed final design combines the feedback from the initial consult with input from a pool of TMU community members.
Inspired by Fig. 2.4, the final proposed version of “Frosted Layers” sees the TMU logo slotted central and to the ground - drawing the eye between the alternating high-low-high layers created by the rest of the backdrop. The TMU logo being as close to the ground as it is, too, ensures that the students are not obstructed when taking their photos.
This version, too, sees a light gradient from blue to yellow in the acrylic - and renders out the way in which the frosting is anticipated to layer it’s varying opacity.
