Artist Statements
It can be quite difficult to pinpoint exactly what I plan to do as an artist. I tend to go through different phases, where one medium possesses me and I’m forced to become a slave to it; before I’m rescued by another only to repeat the same experience. I can go through them so quickly I merely skim the surface of possibility, or I dive deep into techniques, theories, and examples to discover an ocean of possibility.
Because of this, I like the interchangeability labeling myself as a New Media artist brings. The field is so vast that there isn’t really a well-known definition or set of expectations attached – so when asked, I can provide an answer that will cover most of what I do. I like to think of it being anything that combines art and technology to create interactive experiences.
The issue with this is that it doesn’t truly grasp why I make art. It doesn’t account for the novels, or comics, or animations I want to make that aren’t interactive. It doesn’t cover why I want to recreate things I see in works of fiction. It doesn’t cover my wanderlust. My longing to escape. My need to drown in anything that can let my mind dance and detach my body from my soul.
I think at its core, my pieces are about escapism. They’re about leaving behind where you came from, and being submerged in a single moment. They’re about taking your senses hostage, dragging you through a story, or letting you wander through a place you’ll never be able to find. They’re about bringing glimpses of what isn’t real into what is. They’re about trying to make an unbearable moment bearable. They’re about an attachment to detachment.
I hope that, even for a moment, you’ll be able to let yourself go too.
About Me
Currently a fourth-year New Media BFA Artist attending Toronto Metropolitan University; my works are created through the lenses of music theory/performance, visual art, design and fabrication, storytelling, writing, and/or creative coding.
Not only has this caused me to develop a wide variety of skills (such as laser cutting, 3D printing, and Game Design to name a few), but my projects have allowed me to experiment in various mediums to learn and manipulate their inherent affordances for the sake of subversion or exploitation - thereby allowing for both play (something inherent to my creative process) and emergent experiences.
